5 Things I Learnt from US Open 2012

1. If at first you do not succeed, you’d need to try AGAIN. and AGAIN. and AGAIN. and AGAIN…

2. Ivan Lendl is one heck of a coach!

3. Berdych can start selling video tutorials on how to beat Roger Federer.

4. The only person that can beat Serena Williams now is Serena Williams.

5. The only thing that blew the competition away were the tornadoes. Most matches (especially the final week ones) were pretty tight, signifying a much more competitive era in tennis now.

My First Tablet…

….is actually for my KIDS. Seriously. 😀

With the huge onslaught of tablets in recent times, I’m proud to say that I have been (so far) successful in fending off the lure of such tablets. Of course, the tablet with my dream specs (eg. 7-8 incher, 3G SIM slot, 2160p HDMI, latest Android OS, min Dual Core, dual camera rear 5MP/front 2MP, min 1GB RAM, quality display – min 1280X800, memory expansion slot, good battery ard 6,000 mAh, slim <10mm, etc.) has not been released yet. Heh. There are several that have come close…but not there yet. So I shall wait on…hehe. 😀

Anyway, the pic above is the 7 inch Creative ZiioВ ShenbiВ that comes pre-installed with the Play Chinese software. With the tagline “Don’t Learn Chinese, Play It!“, it is exactly what it is – an educational tool for children to master the Chinese language by simply ‘playing’ on the tablet.

The 7 inch Creative tablet itself is nothing much to shout about. Actually with basic specs like Android 2.2 Froyo, Rear camera 0.3MP, Screen res 480 X 800, a hefty 400g, 512GB RAM, Resistive screen, etc., it’s even quiteВ embarrassingВ to be speaking about it. :-p Of course, I reckon theses specs would have sounded considerably more palatable when it was first released in 2010. 😀

In fact, the tablet only pique my interest after my sister blogged about it a couple of months back, and her initial reviews about it some weeks later. I was stillВ skeptical about it until I experienced it first hand when I visited my sister not too long ago.В Seeing her kids having fun with it to the point where it seemed like they were addicted to it swayed my interest to seriously consider buying it for my kids too.

Immediately, I started my research to find out more about this Shenbi software, what it can do, did it work like an app that I could install on any tablet, etc. Well, if it could, my next step would have been to scout for a high end tablet where I could simply install this app and serve both the needs of my kids and mine. ;-D

Unfortunately, I found out that the Shenbi software is somewhatВ propriety connected with Creative, so it won’t be found on Google Play nor can it be sideloaded as an app. For the next few days, I was casually searching for this item online and I was rather fortunate to find one on sale (and CHEAP too!) on eBay Singapore. Although the package didn’t come with the hardcopy books (which my sister said were not so critical to have) nor the Zii Book account, the seller offered to throw in an original HansVision Express Chinese DVD instead. This DVD is usually given out with the PlayChinese Express pack (their most expensive pack). Since the discount I was getting was around 60% off the RRP Basic pack price, I made the deal happen, with the help of some friends staying in Singapore, of course. :-)

After the exciting ‘unboxing’ of the tablet, my kids, especially Collin has been playing with it for some time. I too have been tinkering about with the tablet as well, so that I can produce a comprehensive review of both the Creative tablet itself and also the PlayChinese software.

Stay tuned for my reviews in the next couple of weeks! 😀

5 Reasons Why BPL is the Best League

With the new European football season unleashed everywhere in recent weeks, many people still wonder (and some may argue) if the Barclay’s Premier League is the best lot of em all?

Personally, I KNOW it is, and here are my top 5 reasons…

1. Every match-up is just as kan-cheong! Where else would you get Southampton giving Manchester City a run for their money, or West Brom trashing Liverpool? Although there are certain number of clubs that are of a higher level in the BPL, there’s no denying that every other team in the BPL are no pushovers either!

2. It is so GLOBAL! Unlike many other European leagues where the majority of the players are domestic, I believe the ratio of British: Foreign players in the BPL is quite close! Being a global arena makes for more exciting styles and plays from all over!

3. Watchable time zone! Being in Malaysia, it is not too challenging to watch all these great BPL action. With the latest latest on every weekend coming in at 1.00am (Msian time), the BPL s one of the more watchable leagues…well, at least for me. 😛 I noticed the strange gametimes of other leagues, like the Bundesliga and La Liga which runs on through the graveyard shift, and even some during dinner times (around 7pm!). Strange…:-p

4. English tabloids! One thing that makes BPL more exciting week in week out are the English tabloids. Yup, the same blokes who are responsible for over-hyping the England team at every World Cup. the juicy transfer news, manager sackings, player scandals, outrageous bets, etc. are just every bit a part of the BPL footballing culture. Love it or hate it, they are here to stay! 😀

5. The greatest football club is playing in it….(drumroll)…MANCHESTER UNITED! 😀

Fantasy Start!

Woo Hoo! Talk about a blistering start to the new Football Fantasy campaign!

Personally, I was slightly В a little majorly pissed when due to some technicalities, scores for GW1 was wiped clean and everyone had to start from GW2. I was particularly angry because all my proper pre-season analysis and planning had gone to waste. And worse, my score of 91.6 pts for GW1 was not counted! Although it is still a few points shy of my career best ofВ 97.8 pts scored in GW36 last season, the score would have been my best ever start to FF. SIGH.

Anyway, that’s not the end of it. Having a RESET of GW2 for everyone meant that everyone who had played to the advantage of FF management had no advantage now. For example:

– After the GW1 debacle, now practically everyone on the planet owned Michu for GW2. Big points, investment and advantage lost. Sigh.

– For some strange reason, many people didn’t notice that GW1 was a double gameweek itself. So, FF managers who packed their GW1 squad with Reading and Chelsea players reaped in the points. No More. Sigh.

Of course, anyone who read my early predictions for the new BPL season may have cashed in on the likes of Michu, Ptric and Jussi too..haha…:-p looks like I wrongly predicted on Hazard though. 😛

Although Citizen Sports tried to redeem themselves by resetting the scores and allowed all FF managers unlimited transfers again to start off GW2, the boo boo had already been committed and it was a pretty catastrophic one. Sigh….

Anyway, life does go on and Fantasy Football management is after all JUST a game…:-p

So, on we go to GW2 as the first Gameweek, where almost everyone on the planet has picked Michu and probably half of those installed him as captain too. ;-P

With the new scoring format where MANY additional parameters are included (fouls won, fouls committed, shots on target, etc.) it is making the points to bulge every GW. Yay! With Tevez, Hazard, Torres and (yes) Michu scoring, I was able to notch up an exceptional 80 points for GW 1. Switching for Ben Arfa and Yaya Toure for GW 2, most of my players performed again as I scored an identical 80 points again for GW 2. With 160 points in the bag, I am now in 88th position OVERALL. Woo Hoo! Never dreamt I would reach these heights before, but it is still a long season ahead so it remains to be seen if I could hang tough in this bracket till the end of the season. 😀

I have already made some amateurish mistakes with my latest player investments. Of course I’m not going to reveal it here. Sheesh…:-p Didn’t expect the market to be so volatile! Sigh. Anyway With a 2 week break coming up, I shall watch in concern with hopes that none of my players get injured…:-P

How well are you doing so far in your FF Management so far? 😀
